BIRDS

Some birding places and its checklists

(by Antonio Silveira)

Santa Catarina

Palhoça (Ilha do Papagaio)

We (Antonio Silveira followed by Gianine Luiza), from February 14th to 20th, 2006, have been at Papagaio Island, Palhoça County, Santa catarina State, observing, studying and listing the local birds.

This checklist has as objective providing to birdwatchers that visit Papagaio Island and near regions a reference to the birds that can be observed there.

The denomination Papagaio (Parrot) Island was given because the island looks like a parrot's head, and it is located in the South area of Santa Catarina Island (where Florianópolis City is located), distant about just 200 meters from the continent (Ponta do Papagaio), so easy to get there. It's a particular reserve, where the owners have a Lodging with the same name amd preserve the vegetation all around the island, which is formed by atlantic wood in recomposition and also charateristic wood from rocks coats.

Interesting talking about the presence of the Azure Jay (Cyanocorax caeruleus; Gralha-azul) that is commonly associated to araucaria areas, but can be seen in this island. The most common bird is the Saffron Finch (Sicalis flaveola; Canário-da-terra), being registerd around 300.

The observations have been done at daily periods, especially at Papagaio Island, so that's the reason for the checklist that follows doesn't brings any owl's specie.

Up to now we have already registered 55 species, that follows bellow.
