Natal - RN

(Birds from Parque Estadual das Dunas)

Natal city, as the most of the Brazilian cities, is losing by the years its natural areas for the immobiliary projects, but, it's maintaining an important conservation unit in its area near the sea, the Parque Estadual Dunas de Natal.

This conservation unit popular known as Parque das Dunas, is a stative reserve that, with its 1172 ha is, undoubtely, one of the biggest and more significant forestal remanescent area in Rio Grande do Norte State.

This important vegetal mosaic has many different habitats, what permits the occurrence of a great and interesting variety of fauna.

In July, 31st, 2007, we (Antonio Silveira) have visited this conservation unit, where in a few hours we could observe some species from the local avifauna.

There are not many systematic studies about the birds or this park, but our conclusions for the small period we were there is that thre maybe can occur around 120 species, including local and atlantic wood endemic ones, as: Ortalis araucuan (Chachalaca; Araquã-de-barriga-branca); Chlorestes notata (Blue-chinned Sapphire; Beijo-flor-safira-de-garganta-azul); Formicivora grisea (White-fringed Antwren; Formigueiro-pardo); Herpsilochmus pectoralis (Pectoral Antwren; Chororozinho-distinto); Thryothorus longirostris (Long-billed Wren; Garrinchão-do-bico-grande).

There still is information about the occurence for the Tangara fastuosa (Seven-colored Tanager; Saíra-pintor), bird that is threatened by extinction.

The Parque das Dunas de Natal has an environmental education center, with interpretative tracks, leisure area for population, being an important place for spending some hours and knowing the local flora and fauna.

Our thanks to the attention from the local directot Mary Sorage P. da Silva. More information: http://www.parquedasdunas.rn.gov.br/
