BIRDS

ORNITHOLOGICAL INFORMATION

A rare entry

In May, 2005, Antonio Silveira was at Bonito (MS) region, studying and observing the local birds, when he had the opportunity of doing a really rare photografic and recording registry from the  da Harpy Eagle (Harpia harpyja; Gavião-Real (Harpia) in its natural habitat, near its nest. The observings have been made near Bodoquena National Park.

This entry is very important, because it shows that this extraordinary Eagle still finds habitat for living, besides the environmental degradation and hunting.

Tinamus solitarius (Solitary Tinamou): astonishing behaviour

In January, 18th, 2.003, we have observed (Antonio Silveira, Rafael, Marcos Migliano e Paulo) the not common solitary tinamou behaviour, at Marcos Migliano's Farm, Vale do Ribeira/ SP, having about 600 alqueires of natural forests.

We were on the small river at the primary forest, when we have seen a solitary tinamou, that was also walking around the small river, with its 3 vounglets. When it had seen us, in a distance of 8 meters, it has gone into de forest, and when we have arrived near it, surprisingly the solitary tinamou came to our side, in atack position, opening and closing its wings, being at 2 meters from us and entering again at the forest, where it continued calling our attention, trying to keep us far from its   vounglets that were picked on the left border of the river.

The fact was commented with the farm's antique residents, who told us that have already seen this spectacular reaction of the tinamus solitarius.

It was a shame that in that moment we didn't have a recorder, because we were walking in places of difficult locomotion.

RARE SPECIE OBSERVED AT PEDRA DA MINA (SP)

In the last June 9th it was observed and registered in the highest point of Pedra da Mina, at 2.796 meters of altitude, in the division of the States of São Paulo and Minas Gerais, the presence of Schizoeaca moreirae (Itatiaia Spinetail, Chorona), bird known as endemic in the Caparaó mountains, Itatiaia, and Ro de Janeiro as considered by Helmut Sick, Ornitologia Brasileira. Ed. Nova Fronteira, 1997.
This register is important, because maybe it is the first published verifying of this specie at this altitude and in the State of São Paulo. Certainly the first observation in the place. Therefore, there were seen two birds together, what make us thinking that it were a couple.
The verifying was done by Antônio Silveira . dos Santos, Right Judge, amateur ornithologist, associated to CEO and creator of this Environmental Program, who have organized this expedition together to Guia Verde, Vaticano Taxi Aéreo and the student Lorenzo Giuliano Bagini, who has done the recent measurement of Pedra da Mina, putting it as the highest point of the State of São Paulo and the 4th of Brazil.
The film and the register of the observing are filed at the heap of the Environmental Program: The Last Noah’s Ark.
