(Picidae)

Picumnus sp  Celeus lugubris; Pica-pau-louro; Pale-crested Woodpecker  Campephilus melanoleucus; Pica-pau-de-graganta-preta;Crimson-crested Woodpecker

There are 47 species of picidae in Brazil.
Woodpeckers are relatively easy to identify in nature birds by the birders, because they posses a really important characteristic: they are great “dig holes in wood”, what they do using their strong beak, looking for food.
Its tongue is vermiform and so long, being an efficient instrument for collecting insects that are into the holes they do in the wood.
Normally males are different from the females because they have commonly red “moustache” or this colored spot in the neck.
The tail is used as help organ for being vertically in the branches.
They are birds that nest in empty trees
Their vocalization is strident, so they are known as “yellers”.
The bigger woodpeckers as the ones of the genus Celus, Dryocopus, Colaptes and Melanerpes have a characteristic wavy flight, which calls attention in big distances, being easy for the birders identifying them. On the other hand, the small Picumnus practically live in the middle of foliage and flight small distances, practically jumping from different branches.
Because of nesting in holes in the trees, big woodpeckers are in population decline because of the forests destroy, being impossible their procreation.
