BRAZIL’S FAUNA
(Page prepared by a nature’s observer)

Tapirs (tapiridea)

The tapirs are animals that live alone in Forest areas, preferring areas that are near water, because they use rivers as escaping places, as they are excellent swimmers and also big divers.
They are predated by jaguars and are hunted a lot by men because of their meat.

The family tapiridae has four species:

South American tapir; Tapirus terrestris; Tapir, anta
Montain tapir; Tapirus pinchaque
 Baird’s tapir; Tapirella bairdii
Malayan tapir; Tapirella indicus

PS: In Brazil there is only Tapirus terrestris.
